How India Affected My Heart

As I follow a rhythm of prayer outlined in this book, I find myself excited to get in bed and pray the last prayer.  Reflecting on how I’ve journeyed through the day, I love this particular reflection question:

“When did I experience my heart opening wide today?”

Some days, I have to think hard to give an answer.  But it was easy in India- a trip overflowing with heart moments.

Here are some of those heart-opened-wide moments:

When I touched “The Untouchables.”  I wish all of you could experience the hugs, kisses, babies in my arms, hand-in-hand life I got to live with the people of Kalavai that week.

When I experienced kids and adults playing and enjoying life in a way they never have before.

When I entered into life and friendship with teenage girls- like Sathya, my friend who was a 16 year old (almost) mother of three.

When I loved the abandoned, the orphaned, the child in need of attention. No one prepared me for the pain a heart feels when it expands for so many and then has to get on an airplane and come home.  I’m deeply grateful, humbled and heart-connected.

Now, as I pray the evening prayer, the words have taken on new faces.  I’m kneeling in a new and desperate way:

Pour out the blessing of your presence on all who retire to their beds in sorrow and fear.  Comfort those who have no silence. Shelter those who have no peace. Surprise them with your love.
